Choosing art for your home
Share
Many people can be intimidated by art and feel they don’t know enough about it to select pieces for their home. Truth is there are no rules. Of course we all know art is subjective, but you really can’t go wrong if you have a good idea of your own personal style and you buy work that speaks to you.
I can talk about choosing artwork that compliments your scheme or has the same accent colours, but art that clashes can look absolutely fabulous too! So it really does come down to personal preference.
However, like any form of design, beautiful interiors tend to have a common thread that ties everything in the room together. This can be in overall tone, muted or vibrant for example, how you want people to feel, do you want to energise or calm? Or perhaps it’s a consistency in line or form such as fluid lines or soft curves.
But ultimately, the art you choose needs to create a connection with you, the buyer, and if it does, nothing else really matters. More often than not you can easily make small modifications to a room or sideboard to bring it all together after falling in love with a piece. I can spend several joyful hours shifting furniture and accessories around my home until I have the combination just right!
1. Start with Your Space's Mood
Think about the vibe you want to create in each room:
- Living room: Opt for a bold, conversation-starting piece that invites curiosity and complements your entertaining style.
- Bedroom: Choose softer, layered abstracts to evoke calm and serenity.
- Kitchen/Dining area: Energize the space with playful and vibrant art that sparks joy during gatherings.
2. Play with Color
Let your artwork tie the room together:
- Match or contrast the dominant colors in your furnishings or accent pieces.
- If your interiors are neutral, a bold piece can add a dynamic pop of energy.
3. Size Matters
Select pieces that match the scale of your space:
- For large walls, go for oversized statement pieces or create a gallery wall that mixes multiple styles of art and photography (creating a cohesive but contrasting gallery wall needs a post all of its own!)
- Smaller spaces would benefit from more thoughtfully arranged sets of limited-edition prints or one smaller original artwork that ties the scheme together

4. Layer Textures and Depth
Choose art that offers visual intrigue—pieces with layers of texture and depth allow you to discover new details each time you look
5. Mix and Match
Don't be afraid to combine prints and originals. A carefully chosen limited-edition print can anchor a gallery wall, while an original painting adds luxury and individuality.
6. Invest in What You Love
As I said at the start, pick art that resonates with you emotionally. Your home should reflect your personality, and the pieces you display should bring you joy every time you see them.
7. Don't Overthink It
Sometimes, you just know. Trust your instincts and let your heart guide you—it’s the best way to create a home full of character.
